Connecting Science, Policy, and Practice for Living Soils

Global Soil Biodiversity Leadership

The Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative (GSBI) is a global scientific and policy platform advancing the understanding, monitoring and protection of soil biodiversity.

We connect scientists, policymakers, practitioners, and partners worldwide to build the knowledge, monitoring, and capacity needed to protect soil biodiversity and support sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, and healthy ecosystems worldwide.

Soil biodiversity is essential to a healthy planet.

Soils are home to an extraordinary diversity of life—from microorganisms and fungi to mites, springtails, earthworms, and countless organisms still unknown to science.  Together, they drive the processes that sustain soil health, ecosystem function, food production, and climate resilience.

Yet soil biodiversity remains poorly known, poorly monitored, and poorly protected.

The GSBI is working to change that.

GSBI Strategic Pillars:

Build Global Knowledge

Connecting researchers and building the knowledge infrastructure needed to understand soil biodiversity worldwide.

Monitor Change

Advancing harmonized approaches, indicators, and global observation of soil biodiversity.

Inform Policy & Practice

Bringing soil biodiversity science into conservation, sustainable agriculture, climate action, and biodiversity policy.

Build Global Capacity

Connecting people, organizations, and expertise to strengthen soil biodiversity research and action worldwide.
