Soil Penetration by Earthworms and Plant Roots

Soil compaction is becoming a prominent problem in agriculture. We study the mechanics of soil bioturbation by earthworms and plant roots to better understand how soil structure is generated naturally.

We developed models to understand the similarities and differences in soil penetration by burrowing earthworms and growing plant roots. These models were tested with highly resolved rate controlled penetrometers.
